getting closer

In this case we are using the lens of a digital compact camera, Pentax Optio s60, to get a higher magnification (=higher instability).

Not enough yet.

1st microscope

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

In order to have a microscope to check the cultivated cells we’ve been experimenting inverting camera lenses to get some magnifications, here are the first results.

In this case we are using a Minolta reflex zoom lens at 28mm and infinite focus placed upside down in front of a Sony H20 compact camera with the optical zoom at x10. A support is essential to have a stable image.

A higher magnification and a built-in microscope is required though.

Seeing the results from the guys of Hackteria we got motivated to build something really similar. So once we get our webcam we’ll try out.

Coming soon new images!

OpenLab Notebook

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

A lab notebook is a primary record of research. Researchers use a lab notebook to document their hypotheses, experiments and initial analysis or interpretation of these experiments. The notebook serves as an organizational tool, a memory aid, and can also have a role in protecting any intellectual property that comes from the research. The openness of the notebook, then, specifically refers to the set of the following points, or elements thereof:

1. Sharing of the researcher’s laboratory notebook online in real time without password protection or limitations on the use of the data.

2. The raw data used by the researcher to derive observations and conclusions are made available online to anyone.

3. All experimental data are shared, including failed or ambiguous attempts.

4. Feedback and other contributions to the research effort can be integrated easily with the understanding that everything is donated to the public domain.
